KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • First all-format India tour of New Zealand since the 2019/20 season.
  • India's 12-match New Zealand tour is the biggest inbound series ever.
  • Kohli and Rohit could feature in five ODIs ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Start date of the 2026 IND vs NZ T20I, ODI & Test series

India is heading to New Zealand for a full-format tour spanning October to December 2026.

With 12 matches scheduled, combining T20Is, ODIs, and Tests, New Zealand Cricket has confirmed this is the largest inbound tour by number of games in their history.

It will also be only the third time India have toured New Zealand across all three formats, following previous all-format visits in 2008/09 and 2019/20.

The series gets underway on 22 October with the first of five T20 Internationals at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The T20I leg moves through Wellington, Auckland, and Hamilton before the five-match ODI series picks up on 4 November, with fixtures spread across Eden Park in Auckland, Hnry Stadium in Wellington, Seddon Park in Hamilton, and Bay Oval in Tauranga.

The two-Test series rounds off the tour, with the first Test at Cello Basin Reserve in Wellington from 19 to 23 November and the second at Hagley Oval in Christchurch from 27 November to 1 December.

The last time these two teams met in T20 International cricket was in the T20 World Cup final earlier this year. Before that, New Zealand had toured India at the start of 2026 for a series of eight white-ball games.

The visitors came away with a 2-1 victory in the ODI leg but were beaten heavily in the T20Is, losing 4-1.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma: Will New Zealand get to see them?

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retired from both Test and T20 International cricket but continue to play ODIs. This makes the five-match series a potential platform to showcase their form ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Neither head coach Gautam Gambhir nor chief selector Ajit Agarkar has given either player a commitment regarding their place in the World Cup setup, despite both putting in remarkable performances during the 2025/26 ODI season.

Barcelona prepare new and improved contract for Marc Bernal

Barcelona are planning to adjust Marc Bernal’s contract to match his growing influence in the first team, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Bernal spent the 2025-2026 season gaining ground under Hansi Flick. He started the year working his way back from a severe knee injury that sidelined him for a while, but the 19-year-old midfielder eventually won a starting spot in the double pivot in midfield. A leg injury and a later ankle sprain halted that momentum, but his form still earned him a spot on Luis de la Fuente’s reserve list for the senior national team, even if he is slated to stay with the under-21s during the FIFA World Cup.

While his fortunes have been on the upswing, things have gone differently for fellow academy graduate Marc Casadó. Flick promoted both players during the 2024 preseason tour of the United States to cover for Frenkie de Jong, but Casadó has since dropped out of favor. In fact, he faces a potential exit to help fund a move for Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.

Bernal, meanwhile, became untouchable in midfield. He even added a goalscoring threat to his game, netting five times in all competitions, including a brace against Atlético de Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals and a close-range finish in the 7-2 UEFA Champions League thrashing of Newcastle United.

However, according to MARCA, the manager has told Bernal he needs to take another step forward and fight for his place again come next season. The manager will have plenty of options in midfield, including De Jong, Gavi, and possibly, Bernardo Silva, to partner Pedri in the midfield trio.

Bernal has received various loan and transfer offers from other clubs, but he has refused to listen to them. Barcelona are committed to him as well, with Flick being known as a huge fan of the player. Because he is already under contract until 2029 with a 500 million euro release clause, the board has total control over the timing of the new deal.
