Maharashtra's Ladki Bahin Scheme: Over 92 Lakh Women Removed After Verification, 1.67 Crore Remain Eligible

· Free Press Journal

Mumbai, July 13, 2026: More than 92 lakh beneficiaries have been removed from Maharashtra's flagship Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana following an extensive verification drive, with the state government attributing the reduction to e-KYC non-compliance and eligibility-related discrepancies.

Verification Drive Reduces Beneficiaries

The scheme initially had around 2.63 crore registrations, of which nearly 2.43-2.47 crore women were considered eligible in the first phase. However, after the completion of the verification process, the number of eligible beneficiaries has come down to about 1.67 crore to 1.70 crore, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare said.

Addressing the media, Tatkare clarified that nearly 60 lakh women failed to complete the mandatory e-KYC process despite the government providing multiple opportunities since August 2025. Beneficiaries were initially given six months to complete the exercise, while additional time until April 2026 was granted to rectify errors and complete pending formalities.

Apart from e-KYC issues, verification revealed that around 14-15 lakh beneficiaries were ineligible because either they or their family members had an annual income exceeding the scheme's prescribed limit of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Another 4.5 to 5 lakh applicants were found ineligible due to vehicle ownership, while data shared by the Income Tax Department also identified several ineligible beneficiaries. Tatkare added that complaints from women who completed e-KYC but are yet to receive benefits are currently being verified.

Recovery Process Underway

Refuting reports that Beed district recorded the highest number of deletions, the minister termed such claims misleading. She said Beed has a population of around 32 lakh, making reports of 28 lakh beneficiaries being declared ineligible factually incorrect. According to her, around 6.5 lakh women had registered under the scheme in the district, of whom nearly four to 4.5 lakh continue to receive benefits.

Tatkare also confirmed that the government has initiated the process of recovering funds from male beneficiaries who wrongly availed themselves of benefits under the women-centric scheme.

She said a proposal has been prepared by the Women and Child Development Department, in line with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' announcement that ineligible male beneficiaries would be required to refund the money.

Recovery from ineligible government employees had already begun several months ago, with the recovered amount being deposited into the state treasury.

CAG Flags Financial Burden

Meanwhile, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), in a report tabled last week, cautioned that the financial burden of the Ladki Bahin scheme could put additional pressure on the state's finances. The audit report also questioned expenditure of Rs 3,541 crore under the scheme, stating that the spending lacked adequate justification.

Scottie Scheffler’s attitude during practice on Monday at The Open causes big surprise

Andrew Coltart has admitted that he was taken aback by just how relaxed Scottie Scheffler seemed to be on Monday at Royal Birkdale having missed the cut at the Scottish Open this past week.

Scheffler is likely to be the favourite to win The Open Championship. The world number one is the defending champion following his victory at Royal Portrush 12 months ago.

However, the 30-year-old is hardly firing on all cylinders this season.

Scottie Scheffler impresses with his demeanour at Royal Birkdale

Scheffler has not won since his first start of 2026, at The American Express. Meanwhile, he goes into the final major of the year off the back of his first missed cut since 2022.

Scheffler has flirted with missing the cut on a couple of occasions this year, most notably at the Genesis Invitational when he holed an extremely crucial putt on the 18th green during his second round.

But it was arguably one of the stories of the season when Scheffler did complete Friday’s round at The Renaissance Club.

Interestingly, it does not appear to have prompted Scheffler to begin an inquest into where his game is at ahead of The Open Championship.

Speaking on Sky Sports about Scheffler’s demeanour at Royal Birkdale, Andrew Coltart suggested that he was extremely impressed by the American.

“One win, four second place finishes, I saw him doing a bit of work with our colleague Josh over there in The Open Zone earlier on, I’ve never seen Scottie Scheffler so relaxed,” he said.

“I thought he was going to be the opposite. I thought there was going to be a little bit of frustration creeping in because of that missed cut last week. He gave himself an extra couple of days to come down, and I don’t think he’s overdone it. I just think he’s learned about the nuances of this golf course, and he looks like he’s in fine fettle.”

Concerning signs from Bryson DeChambeau ahead of The Open Championship

Scheffler will be playing alongside Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton over the first two rounds in Southport.

Of course, no one is under greater scrutiny heading into The Open than DeChambeau. LIV Golf’s talisman has missed the cut at all three of the majors so far this season.

The Open has not been particularly kind to DeChambeau over the years. Both of his top 10 finishes have only come about after a charge on Sunday. He has never really contended at the event.

So many will be tipping DeChambeau to make an early exit once again over the next few days.

And Coltart believes that the two-time US Open champion seems to be struggling to work his way out of his current rut.

“It’s interesting. I don’t know, I think he’s not happy with his equipment. I think he’s muddling about with his equipment, he’s very, very technical with his equipment, his 3D printed clubs, and I don’t think he’s got the matchups quite right. Obviously, that’s affected his confidence,” he said.

“I saw him on the range earlier on today, he had a protractor out on the club face working out the lie angles and all that kind of stuff. I think he’s a little bit messed up with that at the minute. But they do call him the scientist, and hopefully he can work out those equations.”

DeChambeau feels like something of an unknown quantity this week given that he has not played a competitive round since Friday at the US Open.

The coming days may provide a better idea of just how motivated DeChambeau remains by the professional game. He will hope to silence many of his doubters.
