One team that has been constantly linked in potential trades is the Los Angeles Lakers, who have a lot of questions to answer this offseason after a disappointing Round 2 playoff exit to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The future of LeBron James will dominate headlines in Los Angeles, but the Lakers' main focus over the next few months has to be building around Luka Doncic, whose future with the franchise could come into question if Los Angeles fails to supply him with a team he's comfortable playing with.
Los Angeles could look to stay at pick 25 tonight and select a young player who could make an impact out of the gate. However, there is a former Doncic teammate who is available for trade that the Lakers could acquire by dealing No. 25.
Daniel Gafford on the trade block ahead of NBA Draft
ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel reported on Monday that the Dallas Mavericks are taking calls on center Daniel Gafford. Siegel adds that Dallas wants to move into the top 20 from No. 30. The Mavericks also have the ninth pick.
"The Mavericks have been shopping Daniel Gafford in trade talks over the last week to try to jump from No. 30 in the draft into the top 20," Siegel wrote.
If Dallas is unable to pair Gafford and pick 30 for a top-20 selection, the Lakers could come in and offer pick 25 for the 27-year-old center.
Gafford and Doncic only played together for a full year, but the two have tremendous chemistry and fit each other's play styles well. With Doncic possessing generational pklaymaking, and Gafford being an elite lob threat, the two were a dynamic duo with the Mavericks, especially during the team's 2024 NBA Finals run.
Additionally, Gafford is also a fantastic paint protector and would be an upgrade over DeAndre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes on that end of the floor. Ayton and Hayes will both be free agents this offseason, and though Ayton may be the slightly better offensive player, Gafford's defensive presence makes him a much more valuable piece.
Overall, Los Angeles should revamp the center position this offseason, and bringing in Gafford, someone who has had success with Doncic in the past, would be a savvy move by President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka.
If the Lakers can land Gafford and the 30th pick from the Mavericks for the 25th pick, that would be a home run. But even if Dallas is unwilling to part ways with pick 30, offering pick 25 straight up for Gafford would still be a nice deal for Los Angeles to address a major need.
