Myles Garrett trade: Arizona Cardinals HC gets real about NFC West addition

· Yahoo Sports

The Los Angeles Rams made a huge move this week, acquiring Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, from the Cleveland Browns. They sent third-year pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks to the Browns for Garrett, who had 23 sacks last season and has averaged 16 sacks a season for his career.

While this makes the NFC West more difficult, and the Arizona Cardinals have even longer odds to win the division, head coach Mike LaFleur isn't worried about Garrett right now.

He got real with reporters on Tuesday, explaining that now isn't the time to think about what other teams are doing.

"You're not really concerned about that right now," he said. "That's not what kept me up at night yesterday, you know. What kept me up was we've got two really good team periods (in practice). We've got a two-minute. Let's see how that two-minute goes, and then we'll go from there."

When pressed further, he kept the same attitude.

"It's not what we're concerned about right now. It's just the season's too long. That stuff just flat-out doesn't matter," he said. The offseason is not time for him to worry about other teams' moves, and he doesn't want players thinking about other teams' acquisitions.

"It's our job as coaches, when we get into that week, to see what guys are available this week for us (and) what guys are available for them. So many things happen within a season, within the division, within the conference, within the NFL. Why worry about that stuff right now? We've got enough stuff to worry about in terms of getting our systems in, making sure that these guys understand what we're asking from them from a standard perspective, how hard they're playing, and then techniques, you know, what we're asking them to do. So again, like what's going to happen in September is going to happen, and I'm not concerned about it, and I hope our guys aren't either right now."

And he is right.

LaFleur's job is to install his offense and defense. He needs to evaluate players to build a roster. He can't worry about how things will match up against the Rams in Weeks 6 and 10. Blocking Garrett and slowing him is a job for those weeks and game prepping.
