The Virat effect: RCB coach hails Kohli's impact in team after IPL title defence

· Yahoo Sports

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower has praised Virat Kohli for the standards he sets within the team, saying the former captain's hunger and discipline continue to inspire everyone in the dressing room after RCB defended their IPL title with a five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Kohli played a key role in the title win, remaining unbeaten on 75 off 42 balls with nine fours and three sixes as RCB chased down 156. He also reached his half-century in 25 balls, the fastest fifty of his IPL career.

Speaking after the triumph, Flower said Kohli's attitude has a major influence on the squad.

“You asked about Virat’s hunger and how that affects him. When I was in the dressing room last night after the game, I mentioned it actually. His hunger and drive it’s genuinely inspiring. Even for older blokes like me, seeing someone as hungry and driven, as disciplined and as ambitious as he still is, it’s wonderful to witness. And we’re very lucky to have him in the dressing room," Flower said in a virtual press conference on Monday, as quoted by news agency IANS.

“He sets certain standards, like standards of intensity in the field, for instance, that means that anyone falling below those is going to stand out like a sore thumb. So we don’t need coaches driving intensity on standards in the field, for instance, because he’s living it and doing it. And everyone else has to raise their games to get anywhere near it.”

Flower also highlighted Kohli's passion for batting and the example he provides during training sessions.

“He works hard at his game, but you can see that he loves it as well. He loves batting. He loves hitting a ball. He loves the feeling of the ball meeting the middle of the bat. I would imagine the craft and mastery that he feels when he’s got a bat in his hands. Again, those standards are easy for people in our training sessions to see, and certainly it just helps everyone head in the right direction.”

RCB captain Rajat Patidar also credited Kohli for helping him develop as a leader since taking charge of the franchise ahead of the 2025 season.

“Regarding Virat bhai, as I said in many press conferences and interviews, his presence makes a lot of difference. For me, it's great learning. Whenever I’m around him on the field and off the field, I always notice him. I don’t speak much, but I always notice him.

“But whenever I have some kind of doubts regarding the leadership role or taking any decision, I always go to Virat bhai. For me, it’s a great opportunity to learn from the best and the greats of cricket. So, their ideas, inputs, and experience are definitely helping me a lot to grow in my new leadership role.”

Under Patidar, RCB have now won back-to-back IPL titles. The skipper also enjoyed a strong season with the bat, scoring 501 runs at a strike rate of 192.69, including an unbeaten 93 in Qualifier 1.

Take warning: Sandhills Canes fans thick with loyalty, excitement

· Yahoo Sports

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final has people talking all over North Carolina, and the excitement can be felt across the Sandhills, where hockey loyalty runs deep, especially at Cheers Too Dive Bar on Raeford Road.

For the regulars at Cheers Too, supporting the Carolina Hurricanes isn't just a pastime; it's a way of life.

"People around here are buzzing about Canes. I go out wearing my Canes gear, and everybody's like, Go Canes!" said Greg Offenhauser, the bar's manager.

Every inch of Cheers Too is decked out in Hurricanes red, white, and black. Offenhauser, a veteran, runs the bar with his wife, Gayle, who bought the establishment in 2001. Together, they've created a place that feels more like a family than a business.

"People just like, come in here. It's like a community bar. A lot of camaraderie," said Offenhauser.

The bar took its fandom to a new level in 2023, becoming an official Carolina Hurricanes bar.

"They sent us a bunch of swag for the Canes and stuff, you know, and, and so now we're doing watch parties, especially now for the Stanley Cup, trying to get more hockey awareness in this area," Offenhauser said.

The hockey fever isn't limited to Fayetteville. Terri Meyer, a superfan from Robeson County, has an entire wall and display dedicated to her love of the sport. For Meyer, hockey has been more than just a game.

"It really became a huge part of my life because I went through severe depression, and it was the first thing that I went to by myself, where I just had to get out of the house. And then I started going to games by myself, so it just became a big bonding thing for all of us," Meyer said.

Meyer, who lives in Parkton, is serious about her game day rituals.

"I don't wear the jersey during the game. I wear my earrings, and then that's about it," she said. And when the puck drops, she doesn't want any distractions.

"Nobody's allowed to call me during the game. Nothing. I will ignore them. They know," she said.

She's only been a Canes fan for four years, but has already attended more than 100 games. Meyer hopes to see more representation for women in hockey fandom.

"It doesn't matter if you're male, female, little kid. Anybody can love a sport, you know? And as much as I love it, I just want everybody to be like, Oh, you're a female. You like sports. Let's bring that cup home," she said.

Offenhauser, a Canes fan for 26 years, hopes to see the Stanley Cup return to North Carolina.

"I hope they pull it out because it would be nice to see the Cup come back home after 20 years," he said.

Win or lose, fans in the Sandhills are united in their support, proudly bleeding red, white, and black for their Hurricanes.

"Go Canes!"
